Rental car insurance coverage on Crete
Rental car insurance can be really, really confusing. We recently read the story of one bewildered traveller who rented a car in Brussels and received an $810 bill for scratching a bumper. That’s because the rental car agency pushed them into buying extra insurance (with a 600 euro deductible), which invalidated the insurance they already had! That’s just not fair. What is deductible?
The deductible is the amount you are personally responsible for paying towards damages and/or theft prior to the rental car insurance kicking in.
Many travellers feel more secure purchasing additional insurance when it's available in order to protect them financially from any unforeseen circumstances that might occur.
Having zero-deductible car insurance means you selected coverage options that don't require you to pay any amount upfront toward a covered claim
Zero Deductible - Zero deductible insurance releases you from any financial responsibility.
What's the Collision Damage Waiver?
The collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver offered by the rental car company means that if your rental car is damaged or stolen, you don’t have to pay to repair or replace it. These waivers typically include a deductible, however.
Why is it important to buy a collision damage waiver?
Because almost nothing will wreck your vacation faster than a massive, unexpected bill from the rental car company.
A collision damage waiver is invaluable when your rental car actually gets damaged in a crash — or worse when you walk out of your hotel and find your rental car has been stolen. (You might be surprised by the countries with the highest rates of auto theft: Uruguay, New Zealand, the Bahamas and Italy.1) Whether or not you were at fault, the waiver can pay those steep repair or replacement costs.
It’s just as valuable when you don’t damage the car, but the rental car company claims you did. Incidents of a rental car company charging for damage that a customer says they didn’t actually cause are common, unfortunately. If you drop off your car when the office is closed, and an employee doesn’t examine it until later, you could be held responsible for damage you didn’t cause. Another common scenario: the rental car agent fails to write down pre-existing damage. “That can be a particular problem with many airport rentals, which are inspected and then left for customers to pick up later unescorted,”
What Is Supplemental Liability Insurance?
Liability insurance typically covers damages to other people's property (e.g. their cars) as well as medical costs for other people’s injuries in an accident you're legally responsible for.
Liability-only insurance isn’t enough to safely cover your rental if it incurs damage, you’ll likely need some kind of combination of liability and collision coverage for peace of mind.
What Is Personal Accident Insurance?
While liability coverage covers other people's property damage and injuries in an accident, personal accident coverage includes medical, ambulance and death benefits for you (the rental car driver) and your passengers.

We are one of the few companies in Crete which offer car rentals without the need for a credit card or other guarantees. However, all our clients are welcome to use any payment method they prefer in order to complete their transactions. Payments are carried out either in cash or with a credit card.
It is well known, that the majority of car rental companies in Greece require a credit card from their clients as a guarantee or withhold large amounts from their credit cards to secure the transaction. As a result, the available amount of money in the clients’ credit cards is considerably decreased or even worse, their credit limit runs out. The amount that has been withheld is again available to the credit card holder after the end of the car rental, and more specifically a couple of weeks after the completion of the car rental. In case no damage or other problem has been occurred by the renter on the car, the whole amount is returned to his/her account. However, if the rent a car company notices some damage on the car returned or any other violation of the rules, they keep the correspondent amount from the credit card, even without notice sometimes. Therefore, renters ought to be very careful when choosing a rental car company and make sure that no guarantee is required.
